Importance of Advertising for Business Promotion

Advertising means the publicity of products and services for the purpose of selling them to a larger number of buyers. In past times, the products and services were advertised by the beat of drums. In those days the goods were not produced in such large quantities as today because the buyers were comparatively few in numbers.

These days the population of the entire globe has increased tremendously and the goods are therefore mass produced. The manufacturers compete with each other to produce similar products. It is necessary under these circumstances to advertise these products and services otherwise the customers will not even come to know of them. There are different media of advertisement; the advertisers use all of them. It is difficult to say which of them is the best, through newspapers and radio seem to lead the rest. The newspaper reading public has increased greatly and the newspapers are now read even in the far-flung areas of the countryside.

The radio is an equally important medium. The commercial programs have now become a permanent feature of the radio broadcasts. These broadcasts are very popular with the listeners because these are always accompanied by music and songs. Moreover, the radio has reached the farthest corners of the world. This is perhaps the most frequently used medium of all. The television comes next, and then the cinema. The picture solids are often shown on the cinema screen and hundreds of people view them in single show. Television plays very important role and bigger part in advertising. There are other effective media of advertisements such as internet, billboards, word of mouth etc.

The commercial advertisements play a significant role in publicizing products and services and the consumers easily become aware of them. But there is a wrong side to it also; the advertising media advertise the products and services which are harmful to human health. The publicity of tobacco and cigarettes, for instance, should be banned. A law should be enacted to this effect so that the publicity of all harmful things like cigarettes and tobacco may be stopped and banned by law.
